“Do not associate with people who drink too much wine or stuff themselves with food. Drunkards and gluttons will be reduced to poverty. If all you do is eat and sleep, you will soon be wearing rags.” Proverbs 23:20-21.
Buffets are dangerous places. Nowhere else will the self discipline of someone wanting to lose fat be tested so much. All that food. As much as you want. It is almost encouraging gluttony. I mean, you want to get your value for money right?
Well, there were some interesting observations made recently across 11 different Chinese All You Can Eat-type buffets. They are worth keeping in mind next time you go to one:
- Less normal-weight patrons faced the buffet compared to obese diners
- Overweight diners sat an average of 16 feet closer to the buffet than normal-weight diners
- Less obese diners sat at a booth rather than a table compared normal weight diners
- More normal-weight diners browsed the buffet before serving themselves compared to obese diners
- More normal-weight people used chopsticks compared with overweight people
From this we could easily deduce some…
RULES FOR THE ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFET:
- Sit facing away from the buffet
- Sit far away from the buffet
- Sit in a booth
- Browse the whole buffet before putting anything on your plate
- Use chopsticks
#5 would probably be the hardest for many people, but I think we could safely replace it with ‘eat slowly’ or ‘chew your food 25 times before swallowing’ and it would be just as successful.
