By 2011 chain restaurants in California will be required to display nutritional information of the food they are selling. This is great news and I look forward to it becoming much more internationally widespread the future.
Undoubtedly it is a significant expense to get all the meals properly analysed for the restaurants, however the restaurants targeted will hardly have problems meeting this expense, which for them is relatively small. The same can not be said for a small independently owned restaurants (who are currently not required to display the information). Imagine if you owned a small cafe: having to fork out hundreds of dollars every time you put a new dish on the menu. For this reason I doubt small food outlets (in this law defined as less the 20 stores) are too keen on seeing this law applied to them.
The the interests of the public, perhaps this is something the government could consider subsidising for these smaller restaurants?
