We have all heard the saying ‘muscle weighs more than fat’, and of course what that means is muscle is denser than fat. But do your actions mimic this knowledge?
When you weigh yourself are you happy if you have put on 1.5kg? Even if you had a few heavy training months?
It is very important that you get over the reliance on the scales. Some people who weigh themselves every day – even twice or three times a day. It is simply counterproductive as there is so much daily and weekly variation that daily weight changes are not indicative of muscle gain or fat loss.
How about if you weigh the same or slightly less than you did a few years ago? There was an interesting post by Charles Staley showing a comparison in the cross section of a muscle of a 25-year old and a 65-year old muscle fiber. The point is: You may weigh the same, but how is your overall health and fitness? If your weight is the same, and your muscle mass is less then the fact is you are probably not as well off as you were when you were younger – despite what you think the scales are telling you.
The scales is a good place to start. But that is all it is.
