Gym etiquette

If you are new to working out at the gym then it is important you understand the culture that goes along with the territory. Granted every gym is different, but there are a few constants amongst all gyms I have ever been in that you need to know.

If you follow these etiquette tips then you will be almost assured to not be hated:

  1. Don’t be an equipment hog: If you are not lifting then don’t rest on a piece of equipment. Someone else may want to use it.
  2. Make any grunting relative to the weight you are lifting. If you are squatting 140kg then a little grunting is probably ok!
  3. Excessive posing is only ok if you are a bodybuilder or figure competitor. If you are not either of these then save it for the mirror at home.
  4. There are signs everywhere, and everyone else does it, so please…pretty please put weights back once you are finished with them.
  5. Some people go to the gym to talk and socialize, others go to train. If you are one of the former then please recognize the wants of the later and leave us to do what we came to do! Limit any conversation to 60 seconds, as this is an approximate time we want to stop and talk between sets.
