Human strength and Athleticism

I am a bit of a sporting purist. I love competitions that involve few rules and no equipment. Any sport that you can explain the rules to in less than 20 seconds must be ‘pure’.

For example, a 100m sprint: You start here, run as hard as you can to there. Winner is the first across the line. Easy.

I think this is why boxing is so popular, and why UFC is becoming even more so.

But there are other activities and games that are like this too, that don’t necessarily meet the ‘sport’ definition. The most amazing display of pure strength and athleticism I have ever seen live was in the Cirque du Soleil show named Mystere. It is a show at Treasure Island in Las Vegas, and has to be one of the most entertaining shows ever. By far the highlight of it is the ‘hand-to-hand’ part of the show. It involves two brothers, Marco and Paulo Lorador. It starts with one picking up the other…. then, well here is a taste:

They pretty much brought the house down every time I saw the show. Amazing what the human body is capable of with a little training and dedication.
